Matcha seemed to me to be some magical drink you had to get from a trendy matcha shop (yes, we have those here in New York - popping up all over the place and usually with a line down the block!). Until one day my friend Catherine started making her own DIY matcha lattes in the office kitchen, proving that not only can you do it yourself, but you don't really need anything fancy (except for matcha powder, which still seems totally fancy, no?). Here is Catherine's method, with a special twist of my own, inspired by one of those trendy matcha shops - a maple sea salt latte! Now you can have your very own healthy matcha happy hour anytime.
- 1/4 cup water
- 3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1 1/4 tsp matcha powder
- 2 tsp maple syrup
- Pinch of sea salt
Heat water in a teapot or by microwaving in a heat proof measuring cup. Pour into a mug and stir in matcha powder and maple syrup until dissolved and smooth. Heat almond milk in the microwave for about 1 1/2 minutes, or in a saucepan until hot. If you have an electric frother, froth for a minute until foamy (if you don't have one, don't worry - it will still be delicious!). Add milk to the mug, stir in a pinch of sea salt. Enjoy! Serves one.
Variations: Substitute any type of milk for almond milk. For Catherine's original version, use agave syrup instead of maple syrup.
